*1 World Hockey Championship Bronze Medal As a player
  • A two-time Olympian as a player, Herb Brooks would coach the Minnesota Golden Gophers to three NCAA Championships. That is already an impressive feat, but it paled to what he would do once chosen to coach the United States in 1980 at the Lake Placid Olympics.

Brooks built a team that was designed to compete against the Soviet Union. Instituting a rigorous conditioning programming and creative teamwork. Brooks planning worked, and the "Miracle on Ice," where the Americans beat the Red Army and then Finland to clinch the Gold Medal. It remains the biggest win in American hockey.

He returned to the Olympics in 2002, taking the U.S. to a Silver Medal.

Brooks also coached at the NHL level, most notably with the New York Rangers, who he brought to the second round of the playoffs twice.

We are proud to nominate Herb Brooks for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
