  • We are generally hesitant to nominate an active coach, but this is Bill Belichick, a six-time Super Bowl winner and member of the NFL 100th Anniversary Team.

A rising defensive coordinator with the New York Giants in the 1980s, Belichick won two Super Bowls there, propelling him as a future NFL head coach. He received that opportunity in 1991 with the Cleveland Browns, but he had an overall losing record and only made the playoffs once. Belichick then was hired as an assistant and defensive backs coach with the New England Patriots for a year and then moved to the New York Jets as their assistant coach and defensive coordinator. Three years later, he was a head coach again with New England.

Belichick quickly erased his Browns failures and created a culture of winning that players bought into. Winning six Super Bowls and appearing in three more, Belichick found unique talents to fit his system and resurrected the career of many discarded players. Belichick was chosen for back-to-back All-Decade teams, and 2020 was his first year in New England that he did not take them to the playoffs.

As of this writing, Belichick is third all-time in wins (279) and is first in playoff wins (31).

We are proud to nominate Bill Belichick for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
