From the late 70s to late 80s, the face of women's golf was Nancy Lopez, who had about as good a rookie season you can have in 1978. This was the season where she not only won the LGPA Rookie of the Year, but she also captured the LPGA Tour Player of the Year, the PGA Championship, and was the AP Female Athlete of the Year.

Lopez never had a year like that again, but she still won her share of tournaments, including two more PGA Championships, the second coming in 1985, where she also won her second AP Female Athlete of the Year Award.
