  • In the 1970s, the heavyweight boxing division was so far on top of the food chain that if you were a lighter weight combatant, the idea of you capturing national attention was a long shot. This changed with Sugar Ray Leonard, whose captivating smile and pugilistic prowess would transform the sport.

Along with Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns, and Marvin Hagler, Leonard was part of the "Fabulous Four," a group of lighter weight boxers who fights against one another shifted focus away from the heavyweights. Leonard won World Titles in five separate weight divisions, and it was him, not a heavyweight, who was the first boxer who accumulated over $100 million in earnings.

Holding wins over Hagler, Hearns, Duran, and Wilfred Benitez, Leonard was named the "Fighter of the Decade" for the 1980s.

We are proud to nominate Sugar Ray Leonard for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
