  • The early years of the Olympics did not see many athletes or countries for that matter, but it developed into the most important international competition in the world. One of the biggest stars in those early days was American Ray Ewry, who won eight Gold Medals, a record that stood for 100 years until American swimmer Michael Phelps broke it, finishing with 13.

In the 1900 Paris Olympics, Ewry won the standing long jump, standing high jump, and standing triple jump, and repeated that feat in 1903 in St. Louis. At the 1908 London Olympics, Ewry went two for two, winning Gold again in the standing long jump and standing high jump.

While the specific disciplines that Ewry won in are no longer in Olympic existence, this does not negate his accomplishments as the United States’ first Olympic superstar.

We are proud to nominate Ray Ewry for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
