James E. Norris

  • Contest: The US Athletic Hall of Fame - Contributors 2023
  • James E Norris
  • Sport(s): Hockey Owner
  • Statistics: 5 Stanley Cups (1936, 1937, 1943, 1950 & 1952)

Member of the Hockey Hall of Fame
  • James E. Norris tried to get the Chicago Blackhawks but was beat out by Frederic McLaughlin, who bought it immediately from the original owner. Norris, along with his business partner, Arthur Wirtz, still had designs to get into hockey, and after purchasing multiple arenas, they bought the Detroit Falcons, who Norris would rename the Red Wings.

Norris was a vital figure in hockey, and his leadership was felt not only in Detroit but throughout the NHL. He would at one time also own the arena where the Blackhawks played, had stock in Madison Square Garden (where the New York Rangers played), and loaned money to the Boston Bruins. If there was any doubt, who was the most influential man in hockey at one time, following the money would lead you to Norris.

Norris passed away in 1952, and in his honor, the Norris Trophy was created to honor the league's best defenseman. Later, the Norris Division, which existed from 1974 to 1993, was named after him.

We are proud to nominate James E. Norris for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
