  • Lamar Hunt desperately wanted an NFL team, but he was constantly rebuffed. Hunt was not alone, and he put together a group of other like-minded individuals who formed their own organization, the American Football League.

Hunt was the owner of the Dallas Texans, which relocated three years later to Kansas City, becoming the Chiefs. For the AFL to survive, it needed strong owners like Hunt, and he helped guide the league to an eventual merger with the NFL, thus giving Hunt the NFL team he wanted all along.

Kansas City would win Super Bowl IV, the fourth contest of the game he coined, as it was, he who suggested that the winner of the new leagues would compete in what is the biggest annual sports event in the world.

Hunt was also the founder of Major League Soccer and the co-founder of World Championship Tennis.

In honor of Hunt’s contributions, the winner of the AFC Championship is awarded the Lamar Hunt Trophy.

We are proud to nominate Lamar Hunt for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
