  • A running back at the College of San Mateo, and a tight end at San Jose State, Bill Walsh would soon be a football coach, working with California and Stanford before becoming the running backs coach for the Oakland Raiders for a year in 1966. Walsh moved on to the Cincinnati Bengals, where as an assistant developed the philosophy for the "West Coast Offense" that spread the ball around on quick short passes. After a two-year run as Stanford's head coach, he signed on to be the head coach for the San Francisco 49ers, and after drafting future stars, Joe Montana and Jerry Rice, his coaching acumen now had talent around to deliver.

Walsh ran the Niners for ten years, leading them to three Super Bowl wins. After decades of mediocrity, San Francisco was a league power and a must-watch team for football fans. Walsh changed the entire culture around, and imagining their success without Walsh seems incomprehensible despite the talent that was on the gridiron.

We are proud to nominate Bill Walsh for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
