  • A four-sport athlete at Slippery Rock, C. Vivian Stringer is one of the few coaches in college basketball to eclipse the 1,000-win mark. Stringer’s head coaching career began at Cheyney State in 1971, and in 1982, she took the small historically black college to the NCAA Division I Final. With that type of success, a large school will come calling, and the University of Iowa won her services.



    Stringer spent a dozen years with the Hawkeyes, and she brought them to a Final Four in 1993 and two other Elite Eights. Wanting her children to grow up in a more diverse area, she left Iowa for Rutgers in 1995, a school where she is still the head coach. Stringer brought the Scarlet Knights to the Final Four in 1999, and in 2007, she was again one win away, with her squad losing the final game of the NCAA Tournament in 2007.
