  • Darrell Royal played quarterback at Oklahoma, but it was with their biggest rival, Texas, where he was his most successful.

Royal was a head coach with the Edmonton Eskimos, Mississippi State, and Washington for a combined four years before he joined Texas as their head coach in 1957. Royal inherited a squad that only won a single game in 1956, but in the 20 years that he was the Longhorns head coach, they never had a losing record.

Texas went to the Cotton Bowl in 1959, and though they lost, they finished the season at #4. Two years later, Royal and Texas won the Cotton Bowl, finishing third in the polls, and they were fourth the year after. The Cotton Bowl came again in 1963, this time with an undefeated season and a national championship.

More bowl wins followed (1964 Orange, 1966 Bluebonnet, and 1968 Cotton), and they finished undefeated again, with a Cotton Bowl win in 1969. This would be the Longhorns' second National Championship under Royal. Royal did not win the National Championship again, but he had a sixth Cotton Bowl win in 1972.

Royal resigned in 1976, leaving behind a legacy of success at Texas.

We are proud to nominate Darrell Royal for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
