  • In 1950, Joe Paterno, who just finished his college football career at Brown, became an assistant coach at Penn State. Sixteen years later, he became their head coach and was so until he was forced out in 2011.

Paterno won 409 games, more than anyone else in college football. Under Paterno, the Nittany Lions went from an average team to one of the country's most recognizable programs. Paterno and his team became such draws that their home stadium was expanded six times and can now accommodate over 106,000 patrons. His team won 24 bowls, including six Fiesta Bowls, four Orange Bowls, two Cotton Bowls, one Rose Bowl, and one Cotton Bowl, and he brought home two National Championships.

Despite Paterno's vast accomplishments, his failure to report on the child abuse perpetrated by his defensive coordinator, Jerry Sandusky, led to his termination. He died 74 days later at the age of 85.

We are proud to nominate Joe Paterno for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
