A two-time NFL Champion as a player with the Cleveland Browns, Chuck Noll went from the gridiron to the coaching carousel, first as a defensive line coach, then defensive coordinator with the San Diego Chargers. Noll picked up another title, the AFL Championship in 1963, and he won an NFL Championship under Don Shula in 1968 with Baltimore. The day after the Colts lost Super Bowl III, Noll interviewed for the head coach position with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He got the job and held it until he retired in 1991.
What Noll accomplished in Pittsburgh is nothing short of astounding. Owning an exceptional eye for talent, Noll’s attention to detail was equally impressive. Good players became great under Noll, and he built the famed “Steel Curtain” defense that won four Super Bowls in the 1970s.
The Steelers remained a strong team throughout the 1980s, and he was named an All-Decade Coach in both the 70s and 80s. Noll left in 1991 on his own terms, cemented as one of the most successful head coaches in football history.
