  • A journeyman as a baseball player, Whitey Herzog became a scout after his playing days ended. Herzog later became a manager first with the Texas Rangers and later with Kansas City, where he led them to three straight division titles. The higher profile St. Louis Cardinals signed Herzog in 1980, and he would bring the team back to past glory.

Herzog implored a strategy called “Whiteyball," which focused on base running, speed, and defense. With his past scouting experience, he built his squad around this concept, and the Cardinals won the 1982 World Series and made it to the 1985 Fall Classic, though lost to Kansas City. He remained with St. Louis until the end of the decade.

We are proud to nominate Whitey Herzog for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
