    *As a player
  • Tom Heinsohn easily could have been nominated in the players' category, and the sum of his career was so impressive that he is in elite company as a two-time Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, one as a coach, and one as a player.

Heinsohn won eight NBA titles and was a six-time all-star as a player, all with the Boston Celtics. After his playing career ended, he began broadcasting for the Celtics until he was asked to become their head coach in 1969.

Heinsohn ran Boston for nine seasons and change, inheriting a post-dynasty team. Boston had a losing record in Heinsohn's rookie year, but he learned from his mentor, Red Auerbach, and forged through a team that won two NBA Championships. Heinsohn won the 1973 NBA Coach of the Year, an honor that, along with the two titles, propelled him to his two Hall of Fame inductions.

We are proud to nominate Tom Heinsohn for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
