  • Chuck Daly had a solid career as a college coach, first, as an assistant at Duke and the top dog at Boston College and Penn, where he took the Quakers to four league titles. Daly left Penn for an assistant coach role with the Philadelphia 76ers (1978-81), and he transitioned that to a job as Cleveland’s head coach.

Daly’s first foray into NBA head coaching was a disaster, as the Cavaliers fired him during his first season with his team only at 9-32. The Detroit Pistons were not concerned as they thought he would fit with their agenda, and he was hired in 1983.

Under Daly, the Pistons adopted a "bad boy" image, and it worked. The Pistons made the NBA finals in 1988 and would win the next two Championships, thumping the Los Angeles Lakers and Portland Trail Blazers, respectively. Daly was so respected that he was chosen to be the head coach for the U.S. Dream Team at the 1992 Olympics.

Daly would also coach the New Jersey Nets and Orlando Magic for two years each. Other than that one year in Cleveland, Daly never had a losing record as a head coach.

We are proud to nominate Chuck Daly for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
