Mack Brown first became a head coach in 1983, a one-year stint at Appalachian State before moving to high-profile Oklahoma under Barry Switzer as his offensive coordinator. It landed Brown the head coaching job at Tulane, where he took them to the 1987 Independence Bowl. That was his last game with the Green Wave as North Carolina came calling.
The Tarheels were down and out, and it took a few years for Brown to bring them to prominence. North Carolina would go to six consecutive bowls (1992-97), and just before the sixth, Brown accepted the offer to go to Texas.
Texas loves football, and they came to love Brown. From 2001 to 2009, the Longhorns won at least ten games, and in this timeframe, he won two Rose Bowls, a Fiesta Bowl, and in 2009, the BCS National Championship.
Brown resigned in 2013 but came back in 2019 to coach North Carolina for a second time. As of this writing, he is still with the Tarheels.
