While Sparky Anderson was a success in the managers in the minor leagues, the media and fans in Cincinnati bemoaned “Sparky Who?” when he was announced as their new manager in 1970. They changed their tune as the “Big Red Machine” chugged along to become of the powers in the National League.
The Reds won the pennant in 1970 and 1972 but when down to defeat against the Baltimore Orioles and Oakland Athletics, respectively. The Reds continued to build momentum, returning to the World Series in 1975, this time winning against Boston. Anderson led the Reds back to the World Series, and they went back-to-back with a four-game sweep of the Yankees. Anderson was there two more seasons, and while he continued to post winning records, he was let go after the 1978 season.
Anderson then took over a young Detroit Tigers team and boldly predicted that his squad would win a pennant in five years. They did just that, and one step further, winning the World Series and becoming the first manager to win a World Series in both leagues. He brought them back to the playoffs in 1987, and in both 1984 and 1987, he was named the Manager of the Year.
