Girl Power.  This was the mantra of the Spice Girls who bolted onto the International scene pounding out hits that charted all over the world.  This isn’t to say that they should have.

Just what was Girl Power supposed to be anyway?  These were five women who were put together by a producer so it was not as if they created themselves.  They didn’t write their own songs, and as a producer’s creation, their claim of female empowerment seemed a little shallow.  Regardless, they dominated the charts, despite the criticism they got.  With their debut song, Wannabe, they spoke of their version of feminism (whatever the hell it was) and about really wanting to “zigazag”.  What did that mean?  Much like basic times tables, the Spice Girls couldn’t answer that either, and all answers on the subject were met with the five talking all over each other screaming “Girl Power”.  Sadly many young girls “Wannabe’d” like them.
