Prior to his trade to St. Louis, Torre was already a five-time All-Star Catcher for the Milwaukee/Boston Braves. With Tim McCarver already in tow, Torre moved to First Base but would be back at Catcher when McCarver was traded. Torre would also play Third Base over his career in St. Louis. Regardless of his position, Torre was still an All-Star player and he would play in the Mid-Summer Classic four out of his five years as a Cardinal.
Torre was already known for having a good bat but he took that to a higher level in St. Louis. In 1970 he accumulated 203 Hits with a .325 Batting Average. That was good, but he shattered his personal best in 1971 with a career-high 230 Hits, 137 Runs Batted In and a .363 Batting Average, which would win him his first and only Batting Title and National League MVP. As a Cardinal, Torre had 1,087 Hits with a .308 Batting Average. He would enter the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014 as a Manager.
