Now while Newhouser’s best years came when many stars were serving their country in World War II (Newhouser was ineligible for the draft due to his heart condition), he remained an elite Pitcher throughout the 1940s, leading the American League in FIP in 1946, 1947 and 1948 and WHIP and ERA in ’46.
His best years may have been in the depleted first half of the 1940s, however, the last half of the decade made him a bona fide Hall of Famer. He entered Cooperstown in 1992 when he was chosen by the Veteran's Committee, many years after he should have been. The Tigers retired his number 16 in 1997.
