In WCW, “The Natural” Dustin Rhodes rose up through the ranks to be a dependable upper card babyface. He may have been the son of WCW booker Dusty Rhodes, but his place on the card was established by skill as evidenced by the fans not turning on him, like they did with Eric Watts later. Despite his position on the card and frequency of decent matches, it paled to what he became in the WWF.
Many were shocked and appalled when Dustin Rhodes entered the WWF as the transvestite, cinematic loving
Goldust. The androgynous one pushed buttons and created a reaction wherever he went. The gimmick that most wrestling pundits said would fail was a success and Goldust was rewarded with three runs as the Intercontinental Champion. After the initial shock value wore off, Dustin Runnels remained a dependable hand on the card. He would leave the WWE, always to come back and he is now in a position where he is giving back to the younger wrestlers. He may never have been in the WWE main event, but Dustin Rhodes’ depiction of the character of Goldust was a Hall of Fame performance.
