Usually when collaborations break up one party becomes more successful than the other. There may be no case of wider musical disparity than when George Michael and Andrew Ridgely dissolved Wham.
While Ridgely was slowly becoming a punch line, George Michael dominated the Pop charts with his powerful voice that had a subtle Soul sound. Although his solo career was off to a rocket like start, his second album underperformed. Legal battles with his record label prevented Michael from having a longer discography, as he was relatively inactive for the first half of the 90’s. Still, his career in the 1980’s was a very successful one, and he has left behind undated Pop/Dance songs that will likely hold up decades from now.
The question we ask is whether Michael’s career was “Rock” enough, however we have noticed that has not stopped Cleveland before.
