Regular visitors to notinhalloffame.com know that we are slowly working on the top 50 of every major team in the NHL, NBA, NFL, and MLB. Once that is done, we will examine how each team honors its past players, coaches, and executives. As such, we want the Toronto Raptors to retire Kyle Lowry's No. 7 this season during their January 10 home game against the Philadelphia 76ers.
Lowry began his pro career with the Memphis Grizzlies, then joined the Houston Rockets, where his skills evolved, but some viewed him as a bit of a malcontent. He was traded to the Toronto Raptors in the 2012 off-season, and he became the first building block of what would lead to their first NBA Championship.
A perennial All-Star from 2015 to 2020, Lowry was one of the game’s most cerebral point guards, who showed an ability to score, pass, and draw charges like no other. A third-team All-NBA Selection in 2016, Lowry was paired with Kawhi Leonard in the 2018-19 season, where they took Toronto to the 2019 title.
He left for Miami after the 2020-21 season, and concluded his career with Philadelphia.
A possible Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, Lowry’s selection makes him the second man in team history (Vince Carter was the first)
