In the metric of fame and what it meant to be a Philadelphia Flyer, few measure up or exceed Dave “The Hammer” Schultz. The pugilistic Left Wing embodied the Broad Street Bullies, and in a team of tough guys, he was the toughest. When he was with Philadelphia, Schultz would lead the NHL in Penalty Minutes three times as a Flyer and it was fighting that many fans wanted to see. Schultz still would have 51 Goals for the organization, but it was his fists that Flyers fans paid to see, making him an iconic figure in Philadelphia.
In terms of regular and advanced metrics, Schultz does not deserve to be ranked high, but we will never remove him from the top 50, and he is a permanent fixture in the basement, right or wrong. The Flyers enshrined Schultz in their Hall of Fame in 2009.
