Harry Lumley was signed by the Detroit Red Wings, but in a rare turn of events, the Goalie's first start was with the New York Rangers, when he was loaned there for a single game.  He was only 17 at the time.  “Apple Cheeks” would play in only two other NHL Games that year (1943-44), but that would be with Detroit.

Lumley was in between the pipes for Detroit during the rest of the decade.  Finishing fourth for the Hart in 1945-46, Lumley led the NHL in Wins (1948-49 & 1949-50), and in those two seasons and the one before, he kept his Goals Against Average under 2.50.  Detroit was acquiring incredible talent (including Gordie Howe) in the late 40s, and the Red Wings put it all together to win the 1950 Stanley Cup. 

Unfortunately for Lumley, the Red Wings had Terry Sawchuk in the ranks, and Lumley was packed out to Chicago.  With the Red Wings, Lumley won 163 Games with a 2.75 GAA.

Lumley entered the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1980.
