Barnes played his first three seasons in the NFL with Chicago before the Defensive Back was dealt to New York. Barnes was a house of fire in his first year in New York (1961), recording seven Interceptions and leading the league in Interception Return Yards (195). Barnes was a Pro Bowl and First Team All-Pro in 1961, and he was a Pro Bowl Defensive Back in the three seasons that followed, making him the top DB for New York in a successful period. In the four years that he was a Giant, the squad was in the NFL Championship Game, which was not a coincidence.
New York traded him west to Cleveland after the 1964 Season, where he played until 1971. Barnes is not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but when they talk of his candidacy, it is his stint in New York where they point at. He had 18 Interceptions as a Giant.
