Fernandez was a starting Defensive End as a rookie, but he moved a more natural position at Left Defensive Tackle. Fernandez was a crucial part of a rising Dolphins Defense, and he was part of Miami's three straight appearances to the Super Bowl in the '70s, where they would win two. Fernandez was especially good in Super Bowl VII, where many thought he should have been considered for the game's MVP.
While Sacks were not kept official during Fernandez's time, it is believed that he had 35 of them. Fernandez never made a Pro Bowl, though he certainly was in the consideration for them. He played his entire career with Miami, retiring after 1975. In 2014, Fernandez was inducted into the Dolphins' Honor Roll.
