29. Doug Betters

Doug Betters might have been the hardest players for us to rank.

Playing his entire career with the Miami Dolphins (1978-87), Betters earned this rank on the strength of his 1983 season.  This was the year that the Defensive End was named the Defensive Player of the Year, was a Pro Bowl and First Team All-Pro Selection had 16 Sacks, and led the National Football League in Approximate Value with 20.

That AV number was more than double than he had in any other year, which is why he appears as a one-year wonder, though he had other seasons where he was terrific on the pass rush.  Betters had 43.5 official Sacks and another 21 unofficial over his career.

Had the former Nevada Lobo not had such a great 1983, he would likely be ranked ten to fifteen spots lower, but the huge part of the “Killer B’s” definitely belongs here.  The Dolphins inducted him into their Honor Roll in 2008.
