Jeff Wilkins joined the Rams in 1997 after brief stops in Philadelphia and San Francisco and became a steady leg for one of the era’s most explosive offenses. He was part of the Super Bowl XXXIV team that beat the Titans, connecting on three of four field goals and both extra points in the 23-16 win. The dome in St. Louis suited him, and he settled in as a dependable option from short and intermediate range. He earned the nickname “Money” for his consistency in close games.

The individual high point arrived in 2003. He made 39 of 42 field goals, led the NFL in points and field goals, and earned his only Pro Bowl selection along with second-team All-Pro honors. That season he tied a then-record for field goals made. He also led the league in field goals again in 2006. Wilkins was accurate inside 40 yards and capable of longer kicks when the offense needed them. He set a franchise record with six field goals in one game that year and became the first Rams player to reach 1,000 career points.

The Super Bowl win and the 2003 season were the clear highlights. Quieter years fell in between, including a stretch in 2002 when he briefly experimented with barefoot kicking to fix a mechanical issue. Accuracy dipped in some seasons, and kick volume varied with the offense. Still, he remained the starter through 2007 and kept the scoring totals climbing.

Wilkins retired after the 2007 season as the Rams’ all-time leading scorer with 1,223 points. He made 265 field goals and converted nearly every extra point during his 11 years in St. Louis. The 1999 championship run and the 2003 Pro Bowl year stand as the strongest stretches. The rest was the steady accumulation of points that put him at the top of the franchise list. He left as the most productive kicker in Rams history.
