When the Chargers selected Derwin James 17th overall in 2018, they bet on a Florida State safety who had already shown he could do almost everything on defense. That bet paid off immediately. As a rookie, he started every game, finished with over 100 combined tackles, 3.5 sacks, and three interceptions, and earned First-Team All-Pro honors while finishing as the runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year. He was the rare safety who could play deep, come down into the box, cover tight ends in man coverage, or blitz off the edge without the Chargers having to dial back the scheme, and his instincts let him diagnose plays quickly enough to create disruption from multiple spots.

Injuries interrupted the early momentum. A stress fracture in his right foot limited him to five games in 2019, and knee problems kept him out for all of 2020. He returned in 2021 and put together a stretch of high-volume seasons, topping 100 combined tackles in each of the next three years while earning Pro Bowl selections in 2021, 2022, and 2024. He continued to move around the formation—sometimes lining up as a deep safety, sometimes in the slot or as a blitzing linebacker—and remained one of the more adaptable pieces on the defense even as the coaching staff and scheme shifted around him.

He enters the 2026 season still the Chargers’ top defensive back. Through 2025, he has stayed healthy enough to play full seasons, collected additional Pro Bowl and All-Pro recognition, and continued to produce as both a run defender and coverage player. If he can maintain that level of availability and impact, he has a realistic path to finishing among the better defensive backs in franchise history by the time his career ends.

What stands out is how consistently he has been asked to fill whatever role the defense needed on a given week, from deep coverage to slot corner to edge blitzing, without the production dropping off for long. That kind of adaptability has made him a constant in the secondary even through coaching changes, and it is the main reason he remains the centerpiece of the Chargers’ back end heading into another season.
