Following Johnny Unitas couldn’t be easy.
Bert Jones was drafted second overall and instantly the “Ruston Rifle” was praised for his arm and toughness. Jones didn’t have the same cast of characters that Unitas had in the late ’50s and early ’60s, but he did take Baltimore to multiple playoff appearances in the 1970s. Jones would have a spectacular 1976 campaign where he would lead the NFL in Passing Yards and won the MVP Award.
