Josh Norman was drafted in the 5th round (143rd overall) in 2012 and after three early seasons of fluctuating playing time, Norman put together a contract-year campaign in 2015 that stood as one of the most dominant single seasons by a cornerback in modern franchise history.

Operating as a physical boundary cornerback in Sean McDermott’s zone-heavy scheme, Norman relied on elite eyes, long arms, and aggressive route-jumping ability. He made an immediate national statement to open the 2015 season, returning two interceptions for touchdowns in the first four weeks, including a game-sealing pick in the end zone against New Orleans. Opposing quarterbacks actively began throwing away from his side of the field, leading to Norman holding opposing passers to the lowest QB rating in the NFL when targeted.

Norman recorded four interceptions, 18 passes defensed, three forced fumbles, and two defensive touchdowns during Carolina’s 15–1 regular season. He earned First-Team All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl selection while anchoring the secondary during the Panthers' run to Super Bowl 50. He was also fourth in Defensive Player of the Year voting.

Following that historic season, Carolina initially placed the franchise tag on Norman in March 2016. However, long-term contract negotiations stalled, leading general manager Dave Gettleman to rescind the tag in an unprecedented move. Norman hit free agency and immediately signed a multi-year deal with Washington.

He later made a brief, two-game return to Carolina late in the 2022 season, giving him 55 regular-season games (43 starts) and five postseason appearances in a Panthers uniform.
