Not in Hall of Fame
Can I repeat one more time that this isn’t meant to be scientific.

We here at Notinhalloffame.com thought it would be fun to take a look at the major awards in North American team sports and see how it translates into Hall of Fame potential.

Needless to say, different awards in different sports yield hall of fame potential.  In basketball, the team sport with the least amount of players on a roster, the dividend for greatness much higher.  In baseball, it is not as much as a great individual season does not have the same impact.

It is baseball where we take a look at the Rookie of the Year Award, a trophy that has been awarded since 1947, where that year and in 1948 there was only one winner.  In 1949, the award branched off for one in the National League and one in the American League.

The following are the past MLB players who have won the Rookie of the Year award who are eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame and have been enshrined.

Jackie Robinson, Second Base, Brooklyn Dodgers (ML: 1947)

Willie Mays, Outfield, New York Giants (NL: 1951)

Luis Aparicio, Shortstop, Chicago White Sox (AL: 1956)

Frank Robinson, Outfield, Cincinnati Reds (NL: 1956)

Orlando Cepeda, First Base, San Francisco Giants (NL: 1958)

Willie McCovey, First Base, San Francisco Giants (NL: 1959)

Billy Williams, Outfield, Chicago Cubs (NL: 1961)

Rod Carew, Second Base, Minnesota Twins (AL: 1967)

Tom Seaver, Pitcher, New York Mets (NL: 1967)

Johnny Bench, Catcher, Cincinnati Reds (NL: 1968)

Carlton Fisk, Catcher, Boston Red Sox (AL: 1972)

Eddie Murray, First Base, Baltimore Orioles (AL: 1977)

Andre Dawson, Outfield, Montreal Expos (NL: 1977)

Cal Ripken Jr., Shortstop, Baltimore Orioles (AL: 1982)

That isn’t very many is it?

The former Rookies of the Year who are Hall of Fame eligible who have not been enshrined is a very diverse list consisting of players who have serious Hall of Fame cases to those who did not make the minimum ten years of MLB service to become eligible.

Wow.

The first thing that stands out is how few of these former Rookies of the Year not only failed to make the Baseball Hall of Fame, but failed to make the ballot at all.  Granted Jeff Bagwell and Mike Piazza will probably get in, but if it looks like that it is more likely to receive no Hall of Fame votes than it is to get into the Hall of Fame, it is because it is!

As of this writing (and again, that could grow by three very quickly) there are 14 former Rookies of the Year who made it to Cooperstown.

Twice as many did not meet the minimum ten years of Major League service to qualify for the ballot.  Now granted, four of them had extenuating circumstances (Sam Jethroe & Joe Black entered late due to segregation, Ken Hubbs died and Kazuhiro Sasaki came in late from Japan), but that still makes 24 men who couldn’t serve the minimum ten years.

It gets worse.

13 former Rookies of the Year made the ten years but the Hall did not deem them worthy of to make the ballot.

11 did make the ballot only to receive no votes at all.

This makes a total of 52 former freshman champs of the diamond who never received a single Hall of Fame vote.

Another 23 did receive votes but were off of the ballot after one year.

Let’s update our tally shall we?

Not a very good percentage is it?

That’s what it is now but what about those who are coming up next?

The following are the players who have won either the American League or National League Rookie of the Year who have retired but have met the mandatory years out of the game to qualify:

Derek Jeter, Shortstop, New York Yankees (AL: 1996)

14 Time All-Star, 5 Time World Series Champion, 1 Time World Series MVP, 5 Time Silver Slugger Winner, 5 Time Gold Glove Winner, WAR (Position Players) Title (AL: 1999), Runs Scored Title (AL: 1998), Hits Title (AL: 1999 & 2012), 1,923 Runs Scored, 3,465 Hits, 544 Doubles, 260 Home Runs, 1,311 RBI, 358 Stolen Bases, .310/.377/.440 Slash Line, 71.8 bWAR.  He will be eligible for the Hall of Fame in 2020.

Jason Bay, Outfield, Pittsburgh Pirates (AL: 2004)

Can we lock in Derek Jeter right now?  The only question on him is who is going to be the idiot who has a ballot who doesn’t vote for him!  Seriously, anyone who doesn’t should have his voting privilege revoked immediately!

Scott Rolen is someone who we think is also Hall of Fame caliber but might have to wait for a little bit.

Rafael Furcal had a good career but not one that will get him into the Hall of Fame.  The same can be said for three time All Star, Jason Bay.

Kerry Wood won’t make it, but how many people penciled him in when he was 21?  It was quite a few!

If Hinske even makes the ballot, it is a win for him.

Albert Pujols is a Hall of Famer right now if he never plays another game in Major League Baseball.  There should be no discussion against that one.

Ichiro Suzuki will become the first Japanese born Hall of Famer.  There should be no doubt about that, whether he gets to 3,000 Hits or not, even though he has a lower JAWS for Right Fielders than the average Hall of Famer (51.0 to 58.1).  This is a special player they will want to honor and will be very hard to keep out.

Carlos Beltran is currently 8th in JAWS for Centerfielders at 56.4, just shy of the 57.2 that is the average of Hall of Fame Centerfielders at that position and slightly below standard bWAR (68.4 to 70.4) from the average Hall of Famer at that position.  Should Beltran continue his career, the 38 year old, should be able to make the 400 Home Run mark and potentially hit 70 bWAR, both numbers that should put him over in the mind of many of those decide Cooperstown.

Mike Trout is a beast and I don’t know how to put it any better than that.  Right now, the bust in Cooperstown has already been made; it is just his to lose.

Buster Posey has only been in the majors for seven years, but is on the right trajectory for the Hall, but could he easily slide off of it.  Well, yes, he could.  Let’s say 50/50 right now?  Let’s re-evaluate in a year.

Justin Verlander is in a clear decline, but if he can put together a few average seasons could he stat compile himself to a Cooperstown slot?

Pedroia is also in a decline but his sabremetric numbers and two World Series Rings put him closer than you would think.

Ryan Braun has everything you need for a Hall of Famer except for one thing…an issue with PEDs!

Evan Longoria has a relatively high bWAR and if his sabremetric numbers continue to grow, he will have to warrant serious consideration.

Will Bryce Harper eventually get into the Baseball Hall of Fame?  That’s a clown question bro!

What can you say about Craig Kimbrel?  You already know the tough path it is for relief pitchers, so even though he is already a four time Saves champion, there is still so much more work to do for him to get there.

Hanley Ramirez is a real wild card.   He could be a surefire HOFer, an enigma or a one and doner.  There is a lot to find out regarding this one in the next few years.

Huston Street is having a very good career, but is not on a Hall of Fame path.

Ryan Howard is a former MVP, but have you seen his sabremetrics?  It isn’t looking good.

I have no problem going on record that Andrew Bailey, Chris Coghlan, Neftali Feliz, Jeremy Hellickson, Geovany Soto and Wil Myers.

As for Jose Abreu, he is very good, but it is way too early to make a bust of his face right now to save time later.  Besides his late start in MLB (at age 27) puts him at a disadvantage so the next three years are critical.

There can be no real call now for Jose Fernandez or Jacob deGrom.

So it looks like that percentage will increase in upcoming years, but there is still a lifetime and a half away from this even possibly sneaking into a somewhat respectable number

So what’s up next?

We are going to the gridiron and specifically the Super Bowl.

How do Super Bowl MVP’s fare in Canton?

Look for that this week, and as always thank you for your support!
