Entering the Baseball Hall of Fame with an Expos hat in 2003, “The Kid”, Gary Carter, was considered to be one of the best Catchers in baseball for a decade, both with his bat and behind the plate.
Carter would begin his career with Montreal as an Outfielder (and would win the Rookie of the Year), but would be converted to Catcher, where he would make multiple All-Star Games, and would arguably be the most popular baseball player in Canada for years.
While Carter was known for being a very good hitter (220 Home Runs as an Expo), he had a very good glove behind the plate and would twice lead the league in Defensive bWAR, three times in Caught Stealing Percentage and five times in Total Zone Runs as a Catcher. Carter is still the all-time franchise leader in bWAR, (55.8) and Defensive bWAR (21.8).
Carter would have his number 8 retired by the Expos in 2003, the same year he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. In a classy move, the Nationals inducted Carter into their RIng of Honor in 2010.
