The southpaw debuted for St. Louis in 1965 and was a member of the starting rotation in their 1967 World Series win. Carlton seemed to improve annually, going to three All-Star Games with St. Louis, and in 1971, won 20 Games, the first time he had done so. He also had five straight years in St. Louis where he had at least 160 Strikeouts.
Carlton was traded straight-up for Rick Wise after the 1971 season in what can only be considered one of the most lopsided trade against the Cardinals. With St. Louis, Carlton had a record of 77-62 with 951 Strikeouts.
