Arriving in the Philadelphia Athletics organization via the Rule 5 Draft for the 1918 season, Jimmy Dykes was an excellent fielder, who was believed to have limited hitting ability.  That was the case in his first two seasons, where he batted below .200 but this would change as he matured into the role of an everyday starter in Major League Baseball.

Dykes was the Athletics’ starting Second Baseman in 1920, and he would switch to Third, when they secured another player to take his spot, knowing that they had the confidence to move Dykes to Third.  By this time, Dykes became a stronger hitter and would reach the .300 mark in Batting Average four times with Philadelphia.  As the Athletics improved, Dykes found himself part of a championship-worthy team, and he would help Philadelphia win the 1929 and 1930 World Series.

Philly was still a great team, but due to financial constraints, he was sold along with Al Simmons and Mule Haas to the Chicago White Sox after the 1932 season.  With the Athletics, Dykes had 1,705 Hits.  He was chosen for the Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame in 1984.
