“Happy” Jack Chesbro is one of the anomalies of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Some feel that he shouldn’t be there and is so because of the strength of his 1904 season. Since that was as a New York Highlander (which was what the Yankees were called then), let’s take a look at it.
That year, Chesbro went 41 and 12 over 454.2 Innings with a 10.2 bWAR. Chesbro’s 41 Wins is the most in the modern era and is likely untouchable for any pitcher these days. While he never approached a campaign like that again, his overall numbers in New York were certainly good with 128 Wins with 93 Losses, a 2.58 ERA and a WHIP of 1.120.
