Greenwell would take over as the starting Leftfielder in 1987, which carries a lot of expectations in Boston, considering that in the decades prior, it was a position held by Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, and Jim Rice. Unlike those three, Greenwell did not make the Hall of Fame, but he would be productive.
After finishing fourth in Rookie of the Year voting in ’87, he was named an All-Star in the next two years. 1988 would see Greenwell hit 22 Home Runs, 119 Runs Batted In, and had a Slash Line of .325/.416/.531. He was second in MVP voting and was also rewarded with the Silver Slugger. Greenwell never produced like that again in terms of power, but he did have three more .300 seasons, and overall he batted .303 for his career. In 2008, Boston selected Greenwell for their Hall of Fame.
