This one should be interesting.

In a different time, Ryan Howard would receive serious Baseball Hall of Fame consideration.  Howard was a fear power hitter who won the Rookie of the Year in 2005 and followed that up with a 58 Home Run and 149 RBI season (both league leading) not to mention a Slash Line of .312/.425/.659 that netted him the National League MVP.  The next three seasons would see Howard belt over 40 and he would have two more of 30 and also would have two more RBI Titles.  More importantly he helped the Phillies win the World Series in 2009 and he was named the NLCS MVP that year.

So why is there so much doubt that he will have a bust in Cooperstown?  Actually there are quite a few reasons.

Howard struck out a lot.  He led the NL in whiffs twice and as of this writing is 14th all-time in that category.  This would especially become a problem as his production waned but his punchouts continued.  Defensively, he was atrocious and he was not a good baserunner.  His career bWAR of 15.0 reflects those deficiencies and with each passing year it is a stat that becomes more important for voters. 

Still, can you imagine the late 2000’s Philadelphia Phillies without him? 

We can’t either.
