Technically not eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame as he didn’t play ten years in the Majors, Bill Hutchinson lands on this list based on the strength of three incredible years with the Chicago Colts.

Hutchinson played two games for the Kansas City Cowboys of the Union Association in 1884, and it would not be for another five years before he made it back to the Majors.  The Chicago White Stockings of the National League called him up in 1889, where he went 16-17 in 36 Starts.  The White Stockings became the Colts in 1890, and Hutchinson led the National League in Wins the next three seasons (41, 44 & 36), Games Pitched (71, 66 & 75) and Innings Pitched (603.0, 561.0 & 622.0), always had an ERA under three, and led the NL in Strikeouts in 1892 with 314.

This type of workload led to a sharp decline, and he had a losing record in the three years that followed with a ballooning ERA.  He was demoted after 1895 and made it back to the St. Louis Browns for six Games in 1897, but that would be the end of the Majors for Hutchinson.

Hutchinson would post a record of 182-163 with 1,235 Strikeouts.
