The tradition of tying in boxing and wrestling has been a long one.  Muhammad Ali was a huge part of that stemming from his match against Antonio Inoki, confrontations with Gorilla Monsoon and other assorted appearances while he was the Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World.  After he retired, Ali was the special referee at the original Wrestlemania, and even in his weakened state has still been a friend to the business as evidenced by his appearance at Collision in Korea and Halloween Havoc 1994.  Ali lived up to his moniker as the greatest and for a man who has earned so much respect in the sports world he has shown it back to the wrestling.  It is difficult to put any other celebrity above him.

One of the things that took the then WWF into the mainstream was its association with MTV and the “Rock and Wrestling Connection”.  The link came to them in the form of Cyndi Lauper, who in the mid 80’s was one of the biggest stars of the music world.  Her celebrity helped reach new fans and there were only a few performers who were big enough at the time who could have given them this kind of MTV exposure.  She was far more instrumental to help taking the WWF big time then she got credit for.

If there was a celebrity who totally immersed himself in wrestling more than Andy Kaufman did, we have no idea who it is.  His feud with Jerry “The King” Lawler was legendary and he played a heel better than the bulk of the WWE roster today.  Kaufman loved the business so much he pursued it at the detriment of his own career.  An induction to the Hall would be a nice posthumous gesture to someone who loved wrestling so much.

When the WWE began the program that saw Floyd Mayweather take on the Big Show at Wrestlemania, wrestling fans worldwide let out a collective groan.  How could this match be any good, people wondered and who did Paul Wight anger in his return to the WWE to be forced to work with a boxer who was 300 pounds less than him?  Shockingly, the match turned about to be very entertaining and though it was far from a wrestling clinic, it was damn entertaining and the Big Show looked good in the expected loss.  Mayweather took a lot of shots in the match and proved he really wanted to make the event look good.  He probably didn’t earn the major payday he reportedly received, but he was “Money” on that night.

Lawrence Taylor may have been the undeserving recipient of the main event match at Wrestlemania XI, but he did not embarrass himself once he got into the ring.  He did all the necessary work leading up to the match (including a very realistic beginning to the angle at the Royal Rumble) and managed to be led to a decent match by Bam Bam Bigelow.

Regis Philbin was a lot more than the guest Announcer at Wrestlemania VII. When other talk show hosts would shun wrestling, or be condescending to the performers when they were their guests. Philbin, who was a television personality for years before most people knew him from “Live with Regis and Kathie Lee” had wrestlers on his various shows often, and knew how to play the game, so to speak. He was obviously a fan of the genre, and knew how to take the wrestler’s personalities and filter it to his demographic.

A long time fan of professional wrestling, Shaquille O’Neal first appeared on wrestling programming when he was with Hulk Hogan when he won his first WCW World Heavyweight Title.  O’Neal would later host Monday Night Raw and most recently appeared as a surprise entrant in the third annual Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal at Wrestlemania.  If a rumored match with the Big Show does take place, O’Neal should be a lock for the Celebrity Wing.

During the year where the WWE had their idiotic “Guest Host” idea for Monday Night Raw, it was evident which celebrities were fans of the product and which ones had no idea what WWE stood for. Very quickly, when Maria Menounos hosted the show, it was clear that the entertainment correspondent was more than just a fan. That night she wrestled in a six woman tag team match, and held her own. She did so well, she was worked into a Wrestlemania program in a tag team match, and she was the inductee for Bob Backlund at his Hall of Fame induction. When the WWE calls, she is there, and frankly the WWE fan base should appreciate her more than they do.

Clearly a fan of professional wrestling, William Shatner has appeared on WWE television a few times, the first of which saw him teach Jerry “The King” Lawler a lesson on RAW. Shatner would actually return to induct the King into the WWE Hall of Fame, and he was one of the better guest hosts in the RAW experiment of rotating celebrity hosts. We would take Shatner over Drew Carey for sure.

A major Hollywood Star (this is Wolverine after all), Hugh Jackman made multiple appearances on Monday Night Raw. His most notable appearance saw him land a right cross to WWE Superstar, Dolph Ziggler in a match, which looked more convincing than many of the punches thrown on Monday Nights.

A life long fan of professional wrestling and the WWE, Arrow star, Stephen Amell, parlayed his love of the business and social media to land a tag team match against Stardust and Wade Barrett at Summer Slam.  Amell proved to be quite the athlete and for a “celebrity match” the tag team contest proved to be very good.

Yes we know that this man should NEVER have had the WCW World Heavyweight Championship and the booking at that promotion’s timeframe could be considered among the worst in wrestling history.  Still, David Arquette’s cross promotion did bring attention to WCW and his on screen persona was better than half of the roster at the time.  Arquette likely knows he had no business being the Champion but considering that he at least respected the industry and that the WCW World Title had a small fraction of worth left, it could have been much worse.  Actually, wasn’t it when Vince Russo was the champ?

Those who saw him perform in the ring will never say they saw a talented in ring performer, but when Dennis Rodman competed for WCW he did so at a time when he was among the most known Basketball players in the world.  His association with the New World Order angle brought more mainstream attention to wrestling and helped to spike the buy rate of a major Pay Per View.

The man who portrayed “Zeus” in No Holds Barred actually had a much more notable role as “Deebo” in the Friday movie series, but for our purposes, Tom “Tiny” Lister is Zeus.  Zeus would headline Summer Slam in 1989 in a tag team match, and was on two more Pay Per views in prime positions (Survivor Series and No Holds Barred: The Match).  Lister was not much of a wrestler, and lost every match, but he was a dominating physical presence who did turn heads.

Yes, Motorhead is the favorite band of Triple H, but it is appropriate for the WWE HOF isn’t it?Lemmy and company performed at multiple Wrestlemanias and created some iconic WWE music.  The death of Lemmy might help propel the British Heavy Metal band into the Hall, but based on the Celebrity Wing, does it not fit?

Jon Stewart was a major star and did not have to participate in WWE television to further his own agenda.  He did in a brief “feud” with Seth Rollins while he was still hosting his late night Comedy Central Show but afterwards he appeared at Summer Slam costing John Cena the WWE Championship.  He certainly didn’t have to go all in, but he did and that makes him a strong candidate here.

Ronda Rousey may have been a regular visitor to WWE events, but her surprise participation at the WWE Wrestlemania in San Francisco was what the “ESPN World” paid attention to.  Based on that, she is not that far away from being a WWE Hall of Famer and that moment alone may put her there now.

The heavy metal god hosted Monday Night Raw (with his wife Sharon) and was arguably one of the more entertaining guest hosts they had.  Ozzy Osbourne’s 2009 Raw appearance was not his first foray into the “E”, as twenty-three years prior he appeared at Wrestlemania 2 in the corner of the British Bulldogs.  That night, the Bulldogs won the WWF World Tag Team Championship.

In 1995, Baywatch star, Pamela Anderson was considered the hottest woman in the world, and the WWE got her to appear at the Royal Rumble that year with the premise that she would accompany the winner to their Championship Match at Wrestlemania.  Anderson appeared at Wrestlemania albeit in the corner of the champion (Diesel), but it is possible that she helped buy rates for those two shows.  Still if you watch Anderson appearances at those two pay per views it was clear that she would rather be anywhere else!

The cornerman of Jake “The Snake” Roberts at Wrestlemania III, Alice Cooper did not impress anyone with his physique but did assist Roberts in putting his snake Damian on Jimmy Hart, the notorious manager of the Honky Tonk Man.  Cooper never did any other work with the WWE, but his lone appearance still makes for a great visual.

Jerry Springer has made a few appearances on WWE Television and didn’t it seem like a natural fit?  We thought so, and the WWE Network did too as they hired him to host the “Too Hot for Television” specials.  Frankly, we don’t think we have seen the last of him in a WWE ring.
