The Fabulous Freebirds

Talk about innovation. Before there was the N.W.O, D-Generation X or the Four Horsemen there was the original gang concept; The Fabulous Freebirds.

The combination of the three wrestlers was perfect. Michael P.S. Hayes was the boisterous leader and brilliant promo guy, Terry “Bamm Bamm” Gordy was the muscle (and very accomplished wrestler for a big man), and Buddy Roberts was the wily veteran mat worker of the group. Collectively, they had no weaknesses and with the threesome they had, there was no match or situation that they could not do. In addition to being the first real “gang” in wrestling, the Freebirds are credited with being the first wrestlers to bring Rock and Roll entrance music to the ring. They are also credited with the “Freebird” rule whereby any two of the unit could defend a Tag Team Title that they won. Considering how hard it is to come up with anything innovative in wrestling and the Birds were responsible for so much, how can this triumvirate not be Hall of Fame material?

The Fabulous Freebirds might not go in this year because of Buddy Roberts just passing away. But yah they should put The Fabulous Freebirds in and have Kevin Von Erich induct them since Michael P.S. Hayes inducted The Von Erichs into the wwe hall of fame.

The image most of us have of Big Bill is getting an entry pass from the wing and throwing his turnaround jumper over some defender and watching it bounce around four or five times and go in; or of course elbowing someone in the face (inadvertently of course) while going for the rebound.  Bill Cartwright was the very definition of…
