Andre the Giant was the man for whom the WWE Hall of Fame was created for and its first inductee.  Standing well over seven feet tall, Andre was actually quite agile in his youth and throughout his career was a featured attraction regardless of where he performed.  Loyal to Vince, Andre headlined Wrestlemania 3 putting over Hulk Hogan in what could very well have been the most anticipated match in wrestling history.  It is hard pressed to find anyone who is more worthy of being the first inductee to the WWE Hall of Fame.

One of the most popular wrestlers of his day, Antonino Rocca was a spectacular athlete and one of the first to really utilize acrobatics in the ring.  Rocca was a big reason for the wrestling boom in the Northeast and his following among the Italian and Hispanic audiences was especially high. He is one of the few WWE Hall of Famers form the first televised era of wrestling.

We have to admit that we loved this induction!  Although Antonio Inoki did have a solid relationship with the WWE, wrestling many times for them in the late 70’s and early 80’s, it was in Japan that he was a true star.  In fact, Inoki could very well be the most popular wrestler in Japan of all time and his influence there is still far reaching.  Inoki’s induction showed that the WWE was truly looking to make their Hall of Fame International in scope and it could raise a new series of possible inductions.  Time will tell if it will or not.

Prior to his parasailing accident in 1990, it is often forgotten just how popular Brutus Beefcake was.  In the late 80’s while assuming the barber gimmick he ascended to the upper mid card and was one of the top faces in the company.  In tag team main events with Hulk Hogan, Beefcake held his own and although he was not the most spectacular in ring worker, he played the barber gimmick perfectly and was a true superstar.  After his accident, Beefcake stayed on as in interviewer, but microphone work was never his strong point.  When he did return to in ring action, his decreased physicality led to a lot of sub par matches and stripped of his money making gimmick in WCW (although we have a soft spot for the Zodiac) he never did come to close to his level of superstardom and ironically would be much higher on this list had he never made a comeback.

Do you remember the “Blow Away” diet starring “Playboy” Buddy Rose?  We do, and as funny as it was, this is not how we remember him.  In a profession with chiseled bodies, Buddy Rose stuck out like the proverbial sore thumb.  He was overweight, and later in his career was morbidly obese.  It has to be noted that regardless of his size, he was an excellent worker whose ring psychology was matched by few.  His last run in the WWE may have been as enhancement talent, but the “Playboy” once received a title shot against Bob Backlund at Madison Square Gardens, was the co-holder of the AWA Tag Titles when it still mattered, and was a huge draw in the Pacific Northwest.  Bottom line is that Buddy has a lot more credentials than those who only remember the Blow Away diet.

Greg “The Hammer” Valentine http://www.notinhalloffame.com/wwe/current-wwe-inductees/1504-greg-the-hammer-valentine http://www.notinhalloffame.com/wwe/current-wwe-inductees/1504-greg-the-hammer-valentine Greg “The Hammer” Valentine
His moves in the ring slow and methodical, but when Greg Valentine would hit his opponent few looked more devastating and believable.  The Hammer won multiple high level titles in multiple promotions and had amazing runs in the WWE in both singles and tag team competition.  A true ring general, Valentine was also known for incredible endurance.  This is a great entry for any wrestling Hall of Fame and frankly one of our favorites.

Hoooooooooooooo!!  One common formula in wrestling is to find a character that identifies with the American working class.  Many have tried that role and some have even excelled.   Nobody ever embodied that role better or longer than “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan.

Harley Race http://www.notinhalloffame.com/wwe/current-wwe-inductees/1505-harley-race http://www.notinhalloffame.com/wwe/current-wwe-inductees/1505-harley-race Harley Race
Forget about his run in the WWF as “The King”.  As a former multi time NWA World Heavyweight Champion, Harley Race was considered by some to best wrestler to ever hold that belt.  Those who may not consider Race to be the best champion would certainly label him as the toughest.  A locker room legend who boasted in many interviews that he was the “best wrestler on God’s Green Earth” very well might have been just that.

As the initial televised era of wrestling was winding down, one of its stars proved to be a big draw without ever having to chase for a championship.  His unique look and size were enough to get him “over”.  Tipping the scales at over 600 pounds, Haystacks Calhoun was a mammoth of a man who was used as a special attraction much the way Andre the Giant would be used years later.

Nowadays, a fan pandering “good guy” might struggle to gain fan approval, but we have a feeling that even with the outdated Hillbilly gimmick, Jim Morris (Hillbilly Jim) could still get over as a face.

Hisahi Shinma, the figurehead President of the WWE before Jack Tunney was “elected” to that post, but he is on this list for the way he brokered talent from New Japan to the WWE during the late 70’s and early 80’s.  That brokerage helped get Tatsumi Fujinami inducted this year.

The first official employee of the World Wrestling Federation and the main Ring Announcer for decades, Howard Finkel’s signature voice bellowed countless match results and title changes.  Many times we wish he was still the main ring announcer, though we never wish for a resumption of the feud with Harvey Whippleman.

Hulk Hogan http://www.notinhalloffame.com/wwe/current-wwe-inductees/73-hulk-hogan http://www.notinhalloffame.com/wwe/current-wwe-inductees/73-hulk-hogan Hulk Hogan
Although we have stated that it is difficult to have a WWE Hall of Fame without Bruno Sammartino, we imagine it is no different to have a Hall without Hulk Hogan in it.  If you were a wrestling fan in the 80’s you knew who Hulk Hogan was, and even if you were not a fan….you knew who Hulk Hogan was.   As the biggest wrestling star of all time, the Hulkster HAS to be in the WWE Hall of Fame.

He may have stood only 5’ 6”, but Ivan Putski packed considerably more muscle on that small frame than wrestlers who stood much taller.  Putski was immensely popular and the legitimate strongman had multiple successful runs on the upper mid card for the WWE in the 70’s and 80’s.  That alone made him a legitimate Hall of Fame Selection.

The only person ever to come out of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling promotion with a decent career in the industry, Lisa Moretti had a decent run as “Ivory”, where she showed off a solid balance of beauty and skill and was a welcome addition to the Women’s division in the WWE.   She would hold the WWE Women’s Championship three times, and though she was not always used correctly, she was a worker in a division that needed it desperately.

Long before she set foot in the WWE, Jackie Moore was kicking ass and taking names fighting more men than women in the USWA.  Jacqueline had proved herself to be a top flight wrestler and finally received her due on the national stage competing for WCW.  She wouldn’t stay there long, and she would soon join the WWE roster giving Sable a credible opponent.  She was tough and sexy and had a passion for wrestling.  She was recently released from TNA and likely has completed in her last match.  As the first African American Woman of note in wrestling, she may not make the Hall of Fame, but she established a very impressive footnote for herself.
