Sputnik Monroe

Sputnik Monroe
An anti-establishment star before anyone really knew what that was; Sputnik Monroe was considered to be the most interesting character of the Memphis territory, which may say it all! Monroe was surly, a heavy drinker, and a unique looking figure with his gruff exterior and shock of white hair down the middle of his head.

Monroe would win a series of individual and tag team tiles throughout the American South, but it was his strong belief of equality that made him a hero to black wrestling fans as he built a report with them, and fought for integration behind the scenes. He refused to compete in Ellis Auditorium in Memphis until was integrated, and inadvertently became the unsung civil rights leader of wrestling. Late in his career, he would team with Norvell Austin, becoming the first regular inter racial tag team in the South. Monroe may not have become a household name across the country, but as more fans learn of his legacy, his profile continues to rise.
