The Rock and Roll Futures (288)

As we intend to make this website a constant work in process, we though it would be useful to discuss the future bands/artists who will become eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Many of these artists are still recording and/or performing and thus adding to their impending legacy. They will be in our future lists so please feel free to vote so that we can rank them accordingly when they become eligible.
Yes, he is eligible this soon! Lil’ Wayne survived from a place that musical stars don’t usually come from; a pre-teen novelty act. That was how he was first seen in the public eye which was as a tween Hardcore Rapper, but regardless of the ability, it still had a novelty feel to it. Wayne did not fade away, and became one of the most successful…
Limp Bizkit may be arguable the most successful Nu-Metal band of all time, but they are far from the most acclaimed. Led by Fred Durst, the band’s energy cannot be questioned, but this is a band that is either completely adored or colossally despised; depending on whom you ask.
They may have merged Rap and Alternative Rock, yet Linkin Park may have had a lot more Pop sensibilities that even they themselves were aware of. They struck gold in 2000 and though they have yet to repeat the success of their debut, they are a better band overall than they get credit for. This may not make them HOF worthy, but overall a band worthy…
We are not sure how this band became so forgotten so fast, but for a while in the late 90’s and early 00’s, California’s Lit was a very respected band. With a few hits on the Alternative charts, Lit made a dent in the musical landscape, but they have failed to do so in recent years. Unless that changes, there is little reason to think they…
Lostprophets were able to sell quite a bit of albums in the United Kingdom, where the Welsh band’s brand of Nu-Metal was well received.  Unfortunately, we know that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which does love the United Kingdom, but only when they make an impact in the United States.  Beyond a couple songs on the U.S. Alternative charts, that didn’t happen here.
Although born in Illinois, Ludacris became a superstar in the Dirty South Rap Movement. With a plethora of hits and a sleazy (though playful) sound, Ludacris crossed over to the Pop world and the planet took notice. Depending on how the man born as Chris Bridges fairs into the 10’s, his Hall of Fame chances will either move on to the right side of the bubble…
A respected figure in the Indie and Folk scene, M. Ward has developed a devoted following who loves his beautiful take on Americana. It is a sweet equation that has gotten him to a certain level of success, but is likely not to get him any further, although we suspect he is happiest this way. The Bullet Points:Eligible Since: 2024 Country of Origin: U.S.A. (Portland, Oregon)…
The time around the turn of the Millennium was good for Macy Gray as the world discovered her unique voice and R&B stylings. Despite her Neo-Soul sound, Gray had a strong Rock and Roll feel to her and intangibles that made her a crossover success. Recent albums have not sold as well, but her mark has already been made, though likely not deep enough to secure…
With a successful hit, “Sex and Candy”, Marcy Playground vaulted in the musical consciousness of the world in 1997. Unfortunately for the band, that was about all they did and unless something drastically changes in the next ten years, we can’t imagine there is any chance for this one hit wonder to enter the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Maroon 5 should be a lock for the Pop Music Hall of Fame, but pop groups aren’t necessarily what the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is all about…
Perhaps a dark horse contender (or a solid early entry if there is ever a Heavy Metal Hall of Fame) Mastodon could one day slip in should some of the bands they took over the mantle from (namely Pantera and Biohazard) ever receive the love from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that so many Metal fans claim is missing.  This a very well respected…
Should Neo-Soul ever get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a fringe possibility would be Maxwell, who scored number one albums in both Mainstream and R&B. One of the more ambitious of that genre, Maxwell certainly had the love of the critics and the fans, but does this genre have a Hall of Fame shot.
An eclectic band that could be categorized in various different ways, Metric has seemed like one of those bands that should have had a major breakthrough though never did. They are certainly a talented group, but they seem to have this nomadic quality that may have made fans struggle to latch in to them long term.
Lyrically tackling religion in a spoken word form is a simplistic way of describing mewithoutyou an Indie band from Philadelphia.  The art rockers have certainly gained a cult following, though not a very big one, though we don’t think they ever sought a large audience.
Lo-Fi (if that is how you define Midlake) has not yet had a represent challenge the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but if someone does, it will probably have to be a group that has had a little more commercial success than this group of Texans.
A major star in the field of Country Music, Miranda Lambert has a lot in common with many past stars of the genre; they won’t get inducted here.
Missy Elliott may very well go down in history as the most successful female rapper of all time. She is aggressive, talented, honest and has her own distinct sexuality; but more important than everything else; supremely talented. Rap has successfully entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but never with a female voice. Can it be argued that Elliott would be the best person to…
Had Mos Def not entered the acting world, we think there would have been a chance that he would be one of the rappers who could have entered the Hall of Fame. We probably will never know, but he did make noise with his swaggering brand of Rap that made many fans wish he would have stayed focused on his music as opposed to his acting.
Although Mudvayne has dispensed with the makeup and gimmickry that first brought them attention, the band has a lot working against them for Hall of Fame contention. First off, Metal bands struggle to make the Hall, and second, Mudvayne has been in the shadow of other Metal bands. Throw in the fact that this band is far from the most respected band amongst the critics shows…
One of the top English acts of the 00’s, Muse made that important North American breakthrough that is vital for any U.K. band to have for Hall of Fame consideration. It made perfect sense for Muse to breakthrough as they have a musical style that appealed to Alternative lovers and the Classic Rock lovers who can hear the Progressive elements in their songs. As this is…
