The Rock and Roll Futures (288)

As we intend to make this website a constant work in process, we though it would be useful to discuss the future bands/artists who will become eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Many of these artists are still recording and/or performing and thus adding to their impending legacy. They will be in our future lists so please feel free to vote so that we can rank them accordingly when they become eligible.
Deep in the shadows of Sublime and Rancid, Goldfinger was part of the third wave of the Ska Revival. Although they were far from those other bands in ways of success, they did manage to receive a decent level of fans. With that said, how many bands that are in other’s shadows are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
Almost a study in Electronic progression, Goldfrapp has created some of the most beautiful and sensual Electronica of the young millennium. However, what does this really mean for the Hall of Fame as Electronica has been largely ignored by Cleveland and is there any real reason to think that will change in the next decade? The Bullet Points:Eligible Since: 2025 Country of Origin: United Kingdom (Middlesex,…
Probably about as straight up a rock band as the United Kingdom had in the turn of the millennium, Gomez was a nice diversion from the many Alternative slanted bands that populated the British scene. Actually, calling them a diversion was a bit of a misnomer as they did sell a large amount of albums and won some good press in the British music magazines. This…
Led by the Madden Brothers, Good Charlotte emerged as a Pop/Punk band capable of mass appeal in the 00’s. Their popularity is waning as of this writing but their limited chances for the Hall of Fame likely lie on whether they are perceived more as Punk than Pop, as the former is certainly the more respected genre in regards to the Rock and Roll critics. The…
Although Gorillaz only “exist” in the virtual world, their success in the commercial world was quite extensive.  Created by Blur frontman, Damon Albarn and visual designer, Jamie Hewlett, Gorillaz (along with their multiple collaborators) the blend of Alternative Hip Hop, Trip Hop and Electronica received nearly as much critical love as Albarn’s band, Blur did, and had their not been an alleged falling out between Albarn…
A band championed by Perez Hilton, the Gossip is a lot more than a band designed to appeal to the LGBT demographic.  Led by the charismatic Beth Ditto, the Gossip was part Riot Girl, part Punk, and completely Indie Rock. Does this equal a Hall of Fame induction? Probably not, but we doubt that this fiery band could care less. The Bullet Points:Eligible Since: 2025 Country…
If you are looking for no frills, no nonsense pure Rock and Roll, Gov’t Mule is a great place to look.  Their real accomplishments are not in the studio, but on the concert circuit where their Southern flavored Blues Rock makes them a decent draw.  Although they are not always classified as a Jam band, it is when they are jamming that they really shine.  Having…
With a progression of Indie Rock to solid opener to headliner, the progression of Guster has been on a solid uphill clime for over a decade.  With stylish Pop hooks and an Independent Rock spirit, Guster proved to be the little band that could.  With that said, they still have a lot more climbing to do to make a serious run for Hall contention.
A hell of a lot better band than most people give them credit for, Hanson became an instant success with their catchy Pop melodies from their debut album. They also suffered a major backlash that exists to this day. That’s too bad as the talent level they have is a lot greater than just being the MMMBop brothers, but music is almost begging to be labeled.
We aren’t going to hold our breath waiting for Hilary Duff to enter the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and likely neither is she.  This doesn’t take away from the fact that in her teens, she sold a lot of albums in the bubblegum, and pop genre and did have a number one album.  Sometimes music doesn’t have to be that deep.
Synth Pop stars, Hot Chip might be one of the most unique electronica bands of the modern era.  The London based group approaches their concerts as if they were a “regular band” and coupled with the falsetto skills of their lead singer, Alexis Taylor makes an interesting contrast to everything around him.  Is this Rock and Roll Hall of Fame unique?  Probably not, but it is…
Another Emo band that had more critical respect than the ones that made it big, Hot Rod Circuit may have also been a lyrically more sophisticated than their peers. With that said, there is a chance that a group labeled as Emo will get into the Hall, but that band will be more commercially successful than Hot Rod Circuit.
The rapid fire Indie Rock band from Scotland, Idlewild, made a decent dent in the U.K. music, scene in the mid 00’s. Seemingly playing with a faster pace than their contemporaries, the group was a very good Post-Grunge band that sounded different enough to make them stand out from the pack. Alas, we know the drill for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; a band…
Very respected either as a solo or with her partner in Frou Frou, Imogen Heap is a Grammy Award winning artist who may not have a lot of popularity in the United States, though is beloved by the music writers. Heap’s blend of Alternative and Electronica is the perfect mix for her embracement of technology and visual aspects to her performances. She isn’t likely to receive…
Although Incubus has achieved their share of hits and acquired a solid fan base, Incubus has always been a little disrespected.  Rarely, has their albums been considered mandatory by the critics and though they have performed well they have had a bad reputation in some circles; well, mainly because they were able to sell albums.  Regardles, of the criticism, Incubus is a very capable Alternative Metal…
India.Arie may not have made the impact in the Neo-Soul genre that many expected when she debuted in the early 2000’s, but she was able to secure a solid place in the music world.  India.Arie was able to land multiple Grammy Awards, sell a few albums, but in the world of Neo-Soul, we suspect that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will look for a…
Does being a superstar on the Indie Rock circuit for a few years make a Hall of Fame band? Probably not, but for Interpol, they were very successful in their niche which realistically speaking is something that most bands can never claim. Still, if a Post Punk Revival band ever enters the Hall, they could do far worse than Interpol. The Bullet Points:Eligible Since: 2025 Country…
Beloved in his circle, Iron and Wine (essentially the one man Folk Band, of Samuel Bean) put out some of the sweetest and soothing sounding Indie Folk music in years.  The critics have gushed over Bean (as they should have) and commercially he has not done badly, but Folk music may have reached a certain quota in Cleveland and has a long line ahead of him.
Although Ja Rule was one of the most successful Rappers in terms of sales in the first half of the 00’s, he is probably best known for the feuds he has had with Hip Hop stars of even greater stature (and we aren’t just making a pun about his height). As long as this stays the case, and until the first thing you think of with…
Jack Johnson was at one time a competitive surfer and based on the music he did, he did his best channel Pop/Rock meets the beach.  Johnson would become classified as a Soft Rock superstar and one that has a sizable niche in that field.  Multiple Singer/Songwriters have entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and though he has sold a lot of records, is he…
