The Rock and Roll Futures (388)

As we intend to make this website a constant work in process, we though it would be useful to discuss the future bands/artists who will become eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Many of these artists are still recording and/or performing and thus adding to their impending legacy. They will be in our future lists so please feel free to vote so that we can rank them accordingly when they become eligible.
A Brit Pop band that was more of a Progressive Rock throwback, Elbow continues to be a player on the U.K. music scene. The band never had problem acknowledging their influences (Genesis and Radiohead are the ones most commonly mentioned), but at what point are bands citing Elbow as an influence? Unless that happens, this is not a band that can be Hall of Fame bound.
Like Nick Drake before him, Elliott Smith made a living making introspective and often morose songs.  Smith touched many a soul by digging inside of his own.  Sadly, as much as he sang of his depression, he was unable to control it and like so many artists he died young.  As one of the most celebrated songwriters of his time, he could receive a shot, but…
Barring any unlikely musical shift, Eminem has to be considered the undisputed heavyweight entry of the 2021 Eligible artists. The man born Marshall Mathers was far from the first white Rapper, but he was the one who cemented the path that the Beastie Boys set and changed the perception of Hip Hop forever. Race aside, Eminem will go down in history as one of the greatest…
At present, it would be hard pressed to find a Spanish singer who has more success than Enrique Iglesias.  In fact, you may have to back to his famous father Julio Iglesias, to find anyone who has done as well with the Spanish speaking market than Enrique.  As you can figure, the bulk of his success has been in Spanish, but this is not to say…
The unquestioned Queen of Neo Soul, Erekah Badu was an R&B superstar that was more of a throwback to the sultry chanteuses of the past as opposed to her contemporaries. Badu was not just a soulful Neo-Soul singer as she could effortless switch to Jazz or Hip Hop, and she had a broad appeal to those fans. Badu is still recording and her story isn’t yet…
Blending Pop, Rock and a Gothic look, Evanescence took the musical world by storm in 2003. There was nowhere you could go where you would not hear their monster smash, “Bring Me to Life”. The band was pegged by some as future long term superstars, but as of this writing that has not happened. They may still be able to churn out more hits as they…
With a rare combination of tough and sexy, Eve was an instant Rap superstar and became one of the top East Coast rappers of the early 00’s. As of late, she has focused far more on her acting career than her MC work, and it could be stated that if she kept up with her music as opposed to looking for film work it is possible…
Although she is very much in the large shadow of her deceased husband, the Notorious B.I.G. (no pun intended), Faith Evans was an accomplished artist in her own right.  From her beginnings as a session singer, Evans was always writing songs.  When she finally received the chance to sing her material, it proved to be among the better R&B efforts of the time.  Faith Evans has…
As one of the long reigning queens of Country Pop, Faith Hill sold millions of records and put thousands of butts in seats for her concerts. Hill may be massively successful, and will likely continue to be, but Pop flavored Country music has never made the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and as stunning as she is, there is no reason to think that she…
Pop-Punk.  Emo.  Post-Hardcore.  Like most American bands, there are multiple labels that you can slap on Fall Out Boy, and while this is a band that has numerous detractors, the Pete Wnetz led group also has to be called very successful.
A lot was expected out of the Texas band, Fastball after their monster smash, “The Way” dominated the radio with a near perfect blend of Alternative and Pop. The end result was a perceived one hit wonder, with a strong emphasis on the word wonder, as this was a band that really should have been able to capitalize on the success and sound they had.
Considered one of the pioneers of the Big Beat sound, Fatboy Slim struck International Gold in the late 90’s. His energetic music appealed to lovers of Dance, Trip-Hop and Alternative and with heavy MTV airplay (thanks to clever videos), Fatboy Slim became as popular with the record buying public as he was with the highbrow music magazines. This is one of those artists that once eligible…
Generally Heavy Metal is not associated with innovation, but Fear Factory is definitely an exception to that statement. Blending Death/Industrial Metal with Electronica, Fear Factory continued the evolution of Metal and inspired another wave of headbanging musicians. Creatively, the band also explored complex lyrics and was known for taking their listeners on a journey throughout their albums. Their limited Hall of Fame chances however lie upon…
We suspect that there is a lot more to the story of Leslie Feist to be written, and should that follow the current path, she might make the Hall of Fame. Of course, our guess is the Canadian Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the not the more popular one. Kidding aside, along with Broken Social Scene, Feist is a very respected Adult Alternative musician…
As the Electronic genre continues to grow, it is almost expected to find that the bulk of the music emerges from Europe.  In Austria, we find Christian Fennesz who although is appropriately categorized as an Electronic artist, Fennesz creates a large part of his music with a six string guitar.  Fennesz is often cited as an artist whose music is amongst the most richly textured and…
In the mid 90’s, Filter was able to capitalize on the still prevalent Alternative boom with a debut album that featured Industrial and Alternative influences.  Filter was than able to carve out a decent career with albums and multiple Soundtrack singles that kept them in Alternative scene’s eye.  Although they did achieve some success, they did not do so as a leader of the genre and…
Wisely changing their name from the Rainbow Butt Monkeys, Finger Eleven was for a long time one of the best kept secrets in Canadian Hard Rock.  As they continued to evolve and incorporate more varied elements into their work, Finger Eleven not only escaped the Underground in Canada, they were able to get noticed in the United States.  With their last album gaining them attention, it…
She was already pegged as a future legend before she turned twenty, but the lofty expectations were not something that Fiona Apple could possibly meet. Regardless of that fact, Apple became a cult figure with only four full length albums over the past twenty years, though due to her personal issues is actually remarkable. Had Fiona Apple became half of what was expected of her (though…
The stage name of John Ondrasik, Five For Fighting features Adult Contemporary sounding piano based American Rock and Roll. Ondrasik achieved some success mostly from his hit, “Superman (It’s Not Easy)” and is primarily known for that song alone. Overall, he is a good performer, but you can’t be known for only one song and expect to cruise into Cleveland.
While there should not be a lot of doubt that the New Zealand group, Flight of the Conchords were hysterical and ushered a lot of laughs on HBO, is there not equal perception that this is not a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame act?  We will let you tell us if there is more to their story.
