2021 Rock Eligibles

With a name like Anti-Flag you would expect to hear an anti-establishment Punk Band, and that is exactly what you get! They wear the American flag upside down and though they don’t seem to have much positive to say about anything, you never have to guess where they are coming from. A Punk band with decent ability, Anti-Flag may fly the Punk flag which the Hall…
Selling well over thirty million albums worldwide, Aqua may have been an International well known Bubblegum act but they have may have among the lowest Rock and Roll credibility and influence of anyone that we mention here. This is far from what belongs in Cleveland.
Do we really have to talk about these guys on our site? Oh wait….. this is our site, and no we don’t.
Best known for the Adult Contemporary hit, Barely Breathing, Duncan Sheik seemed set up for a decent run on the musical charts. He appeared to have just enough Crossover Alternative people and throwback appeal to acquire the Singer/Songwriter set, but he never was able to duplicate his success again and he faded away like so many others.
Basically the constant project of Mark Oliver Everett (and whomever he is playing with at the time), Eels are one of those many acts that will always gain musical praise from critics, though continue to struggle to sell a lot of units. This is one of the better Alternative Rock acts of the past twenty years, but with only one modest hit and a discography (while…
A lot was expected out of the Texas band, Fastball after their monster smash, “The Way” dominated the radio with a near perfect blend of Alternative and Pop. The end result was a perceived one hit wonder, with a strong emphasis on the word wonder, as this was a band that really should have been able to capitalize on the success and sound they had.
Best known for what seems like a novelty hit (Stacy’s Mom), Fountains of Wayne were actually a decent Power Pop band who has a catalogue of music that shows a decent evolution and is far greater than what the average fan perceives them as. Of course, perception is reality and that goofy song might just be the yoke that prevents them for a serious HOF shot.
About as eclectic a band as there is, Fun Lovin’ Criminals did everything on the Alternative spectrum and amazingly blended it well. They would become College radio staples (although more so in Europe than the States) and found themselves a nice little niche for themselves in the world of music. OF course, a nice little niche is not what the Hall of Fame houses.
Possibly the most well-known of the Wu Tang Clan, Ghostface Killah has an impressive discography that showcases his prowess on the microphone. The fans and critic agree as many of his albums sold well; virtually all of which were praised by the critics in the music magazines. Regardless, Ghostface has to be considered in the same boat as his other Wu Tang members in that their…
Should Neo-Soul ever get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a fringe possibility would be Maxwell, who scored number one albums in both Mainstream and R&B. One of the more ambitious of that genre, Maxwell certainly had the love of the critics and the fans, but does this genre have a Hall of Fame shot.
A very good Third Wave Ska Band, Reel Big Fish was good enough to sell a record or two, but was perpetually in the shadows of other Ska bands that rocketed to the top. As you can imagine moderate success and the failure to be considered an innovator as opposed to a member of a pack does not a Hall of Famer make..
A colossal star in England and the rest of Europe, Robbie Williams did have a small taste of success with his slickly produced Pop. Williams was initially a member of the British Boy Band, Take That, but after quitting (or being ousted) the group, Williams sought solo stardom which he did eventually get. He won’t make the Hall of Fame, but he can console himself with…
The leader of the influential Lo-Fi group, Guided by Voices, Robert Pollard struck out on his own and developed a much acclaimed musical catalogue on his own. There are many who praise Pollard as a musical genius, but foe every one that says this, there are likely ten people saying “Who the hell is Robert Pollard?”
From Finland, the Rasmus dominated the Hard Rock scene in their native country and throughout Scandinavia and parts of Europe. Again, we know the score; a band has to conquer the States to have any reasonable shot for the Hall of Fame, but if there is a Finnish Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (and for the record, we really are not that curious) they would…
Taking and Rock and Roll and the Symphony to the next level, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra is not known for their albums (although they have sold millions) but for their brilliant concerts that transcends generations. This isn’t exactly a Hall of Fame entity, but there should be some Hall reserved for this type of brilliant fusion. We just aren’t sure what it is.
