25. Sonic Youth

Our next act is a band that will likely be beat out for induction by other 90’s Alternative acts, despite having a sound that wasn’t really like the bands they are often lumped with. Of course, it is really hard to categorize Sonic Youth with any other band, they were just that unique.

Unlike other bands on this list, Sonic Youth spent much of their career forgoing the traditional Rock and Roll platform. Much of their work was based on experimentation pushing the boundaries of what a guitar could do by using feedback and various tuning to create a wide variety of sounds and molded them into palatable music that was different than anything else in the musical landscape. Certainly considered influential within the Indy and Underground scene, it remains to be seen whether their lack of record sales could hold them back. Our guess is that should they get in; the Hall will likely put Nirvana and Pearl Jam in first. Since neither are eligible for awhile, Sonic Youth’s wait could be a long one.

Sonic Youth invented alternative music (as we knew/listened to it in the 90s). They bridge the gap between punk, crazy NYC no wave guitar experimentation (i.e. Glenn Branca), and what we know as grunge in the 90s. And aside from their stylistic influence, Kurt Cobain would have never signed with Geffen had it not been for Thurston Moore's influence. And THEN what would have happened/not happened?!

These guys should definitely be the next American alternative act inducted (I'd definitely rather see them in before RHCP). They were as big of an influence on Nirvana as the Pixies were AND had much greater longevity to boot. They will probably get in before long because Neil Young is a hall favorite and he had these guys opening for him in the late '80s and sang their praises repeatedly.

  • 74. The Zombies
Surprisingly, it is not uncommon for a musician to have their biggest hit after they passed away. We wonder if the Zombies could identify on some level, as they achieved their biggest success after they disbanded.   The Zombies were part of the British Invasion and like their compatriots they sought fame and fortune in the United States. Where they…
