482. Gentle Giant

The world of Progressive Rock brought forth many successful bands. Gentle Giant did have a devoted group of fans, a wide array of technical skills but for whatever reason never reached the commercial success of bands like Genesis, Yes or ELP. For years they always seemed on the cusp of a breakout and although that didn’t happen, many in Progressive Rock circles have always applauded Gentle Giant for their experimentation and skills. Of course, commercially successful Progressive Rock bands are struggling to crack the Hall, so the chances of Gentle Giant are far from gigantic at all.

I love Gentle Giant. They were a great, unique Progressive Rock band, and they were also very influential in the Progressive Rock circle. Alas, that dreaded Prog Rock tag is stuck to their foreheads, and, truth be told, their albums never sold all that great. Gentle Giant have a devoted cult following to this day (myself included), but they just weren't popular enough, nor did they have the approval of music critics, who just couldn't appreciate their intricate, complex music and vocal arrangements. Sure, I'd love to see Gentle Giant be recognized by the Hall Of Fame. I think they were a very bold, incredible band. But with their lack of commercial success and critical acclaim, it probably ain't gonna happen.
